“Try not to stir the meat too much—only occasionally.” The polished blonde with a pristine apron smiled into the TV camera as she wielded her spatula—proving that she, indeed, wasn’t stirring too much.

Whatever too much entailed.

“It’s like half of cooking is pure instinct.” Defeated, Rory grabbed for the remote, which was tucked into the side of the chair next to her. “How is anyone supposed to have a chance?”

“Don’t change it yet.” From her seat on Rory’s sofa, Nicole tossed a piece of popcorn in Rory’s general direction. It fell forlornly to the carpet. “We’ve already learned you need to heat the pan before browning meat so you don’t accidentally steam it.”

“You two are hopeless.” Grady’s face, still tired but slowly looking more and more like his old healthy self, filled Rory’s phone via FaceTime on the coffee table. “I’ve told you to heat the skillet first literally ten times. Minimum.”

“But you didn’t wear an apron while talking sternly into a camera.” Nicole shrugged. “Less impact.”

Rory clicked off the TV and rubbed her temples. “I’m trying, you guys. I’ve been watching nothing but the Food Network for days. And so far, all I’ve learned is that I have a severe shortage of custom aprons, I never salt my pasta water, and I’m absolutely terrified of the bossy guy in the chef hat on that one reality cooking show.” She let out a little shudder. She’d actually had a nightmare about him the night before—him chasing her around a burning food truck, waving a rubber chicken, and yelling that she was a failure.

“He is a little scary.” Nicole shoveled another handful of popcorn into her mouth. “That’s legit.”

Rory peered at Grady on the phone. “Did you know you’re supposed to store ginger root in the freezer?”

He pursed his lips.

“See? You’re learning more than you realize.” Nicole applauded, dropping popcorn onto the couch cushions. “Oops.”

“But we don’t even cook with ginger. It’s useless knowledge.” Rory stood and arched her back. She’d been so motivated to cook after the run-in with Jude at the Silent Spade and telling conversation with her father. So eager to go into round two strong. But here it was Tuesday, and they still didn’t have a theme picked out for Saturday’s contest. “I’m doomed. Again.”

Maybe if she had more time. Say, six months to really invest in cooking courses, overcome her fears, and get a few successes in the kitchen under her belt. But if she had six months, there wouldn’t be a problem. Grady’s mono would be long since healed, and he’d be back in the kitchen where he belonged.

Where she most certainly didn’t.

Nicole tilted her head. “What was it that little Disney rat always said? Anyone can cook?”

Rory and Grady groaned simultaneously.

“Maybe that’s our theme. Ratatouille.” Nicole grinned.

“Right. Or maybe we should pick another animated classic and go all out Under the Sea or Into the Unknown.”

Grady snorted. “You guys are overthinking this. As usual.”

“Has he gotten grumpier since he’s been sick?” Rory raised her eyebrows at Nicole.
